Healthy Cats In 1833 the Supreme Court heard the case of the United States v. George Wilson. On May 27, 1830, Wilson and co-conspirator James Porter were both sentenced to death after being convicted of robbing a U.S. postal worker and putting the carrier’s life in jeopardy. While Porter was executed just over a month later, on July 2, 1830, Wilson managed to escape the sentence. President Andrew Jackson decided to pardon Wilson for the death penalty charge on the understanding that he had yet to be sentenced for other crimes (for which he was looking at a minimum of 20 years). For some reason Wilson waived the pardon, possibly because of confusion about what case he was being tried for at the time and what cases the pardon was for.

The frontal hairline is often preserved in women Just Jane In this Article
BROWSE A – Z Women lose hair on an inherited (genetic) basis, too, but the female pattern tends to be more diffuse, with less likelihood of the crown and frontal hairline being lost. Although some women may notice hair thinning as early as their 20s, the pace of hair loss tends to be gradual, often taking years to become obvious to others. There seems to be a normal physiologic thinning that comes with age and occurs in many women in their early to mid-30s. More women have underlying causes of hair loss than men. These include treatable conditions like anemia and thyroid disease and polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). These conditions are diagnosed by blood tests along with a historical and physical evidence. Although a few studies have suggested that baldness may be inherited through the mother’s family genes, these theories require further testing. Current studies are inconclusive. Although not indicated for female pattern balding, spironolactone (Aldactone) has had some success in treating this condition.

Each hair sits in a cavity in the skin called a follicle. Baldness in men occurs when the follicle shrinks over time, resulting in shorter and finer hair. The end result is a very small follicle with no hair inside. Ordinarily, hair should grow back. However, in men who are balding, the follicle fails to grow a new hair. Why this occurs is not well understood, but it is related to your genes and male sex hormones. Even though the follicles are small, they remain alive, suggesting the possibility of new growth.

Race At The Griffin Center of Hair Restoration and Research, we know that hair loss can be a complicated issue, stemming from numerous potential causes, and we believe that it is important for every patient to undergo a careful diagnostic process before any effective treatment plan can be formulated.  However, in a vast majority of cases, the hair loss that occurs in both men and women can most often be attributed to a condition known as androgenetic alopecia, or genetic pattern baldness.  This condition occurs when hair follicles have a genetically-inherited sensitivity to dihydrotestosterone, or DHT, a by-product of the androgen testosterone which is an important hormone present in both men and women.  When hair follicles inherit this sensitivity from either parent, any increase in the relative concentration of DHT causes them to gradually shrink, producing thinner and thinner hairs until they stop producing hair altogether.  Androgenetic alopecia is specifically referred to as pattern baldness because it does not affect all follicles equally.  Rather, the sensitivity seems to only affect the follicles in highly specific areas, and progress in a predictable pattern.  This is the reason that hair transplant procedures, which move follicles from areas that are not affected by androgenetic alopecia into areas that are, work.  It is also the reason why male and female versions of the same condition can present so differently.

At the level of the somatic stem cell, androgens promote differentiation of facial hair dermal papillae, but inhibit it at the scalp.[6] Other research suggests the enzyme prostaglandin D2 synthase and its product prostaglandin D2 (PGD2) in hair follicles as contributive.[10]

In the past few years, however, a growing number of patients are reporting severe neurological side effects after taking finasteride‚ so many that the National Institutes of Health (NIH) recognizes Post-Finasteride Syndrome on their list of genetic and rare diseases. Patients suffering from so-called Post-Finasteride Syndrome have reported mental and neurological side effects, like depression, suicidal ideation, anxiety, and impaired memory, and have reported such symptoms even after several months of discontinuing the drug. But these claims make little sense to most dermatologists.

Anti-androgens. Androgen receptor–blocking drugs such as spironolactone (Aldactone) and finasteride (Propecia) are not approved for the treatment of female pattern hair loss, and there is little reliable evidence that they are effective. However, some case studies suggest that women who don’t respond to minoxidil may benefit from the addition of spironolactone. In the relatively uncommon cases where there is an excess of androgen, a clinician may prescribe 100 to 200 milligrams of an androgen receptor–blocking drug daily, together with an oral contraceptive for women of reproductive age. (A woman taking one of these drugs should not become pregnant because they can cause genital abnormalities in a male fetus.) Possible side effects include weight gain, loss of libido, depression, and fatigue.

Homeopathy Clinics in Mumbai Hair Transplant Both male and female pattern hair loss appear to have a genetic component, meaning that it is possible to inherit a predisposition for this form of hair loss from your relatives.  Contrary to what was once thought, this inheritance is not based solely on the female parent.  In fact, according to the most recent research, the genetic backgrounds of both parents seem to play a significant role in pattern hair loss.  Until recently, scientists believed that androgenetic alopecia was caused, in both men and women, by hormones, particularly the predominance of the male sex hormone, testosterone, which women normally have in trace amounts. Further investigation determined that a derivative of the male hormone testosterone called dihydrotestosterone (or DHT) is actually at the core of the balding process.  When DHT binds to certain receptors in the hair follicles of the scalp it causes them to shrink.  Over time, this results in the production of hair that is both shorter and finer than before.  Eventually, the affected scalp follicles go from producing large, thick, pigmented terminal hairs to thinner, shorter, indeterminate hairs and finally to short, wispy, non-pigmented vellus hairs before they ultimately stop producing hair altogether.
